lyrics

Tom Foundry finished up with his laundry
and he drinks the detergent
says now I’m gonna get my insides clean
his wife out on the town that night
they call her up it is urgent
old Tom is sick in the machine

she cries and takes a stab at goodbyes
but she just can’t get her words in
says lord I hope it’s not too late
she’d lied cheating Tommy on the side
and having drinks with the surgeon
by then too drunk to operate

so he cursed and said that I could call
the nurse in but I don’t think its worth it
since last week she’s been out of town
go home and clear the foam from his throat
and if he don’t seem allergic
ring him out and hang him upside down

Tommy choked and he woke in the morning
winnowed out with the linens
arms dangling beneath the dogwood trees
he died as he dried over night
fresh and strung out and grinning
says lord I’ve slept quite comfortably

Tom’s story made it down to the quarry
where he worked for his $$$
they said oh to be hanging out on the line
unstained from the tunnel when the day
is clean and bleached bright and sunny
It sure beats working in the mine
